Cost-Cutting Ways to Save Money on Your Heating Bills

Let’s be honest; being cold is no one’s idea of fun. Waking up on those dark winter mornings, forcing yourself up and in the shower can be near impossible if you’re not an early bird. You’re tempted to flick on that heating switch but then remember how much you’ve had it on lately and how much this month’s heating bill will skyrocket if you’re not careful. However, there are ways to save money on those annoying bills and you don’t have to wake up covered in icicles every morning.

Through teaming up with Rix, leading heating oil suppliers in the UK, we present to you some clever, cost-cutting ways to save money on your heating bills. From handy hacks to switching your energy type, you can reduce the amount of money you spend without really thinking too much.

Wear more layers!

Let’s start with the obvious. When it’s cold, consider ditching the heating for a few more layers of clothing; it can make all the difference. Choosing the right fabric of clothing can keep in your body heat for longer and is a lot cheaper than cranking up those radiators! As well as jumpers, think about thermal socks and undergarments to keep out the cold.  If you reached for an extra jumper instead of turning up the thermostat at the first sign of a shiver, you could save yourself a few extra pennies, and we all know pennies make pounds!

Get cooking.

Here’s an unusual one. Cooking is already an automatic way of gathering lots of heat from the use of ovens and stoves. Your kitchen can quickly become the coziest room of the house! Cooking in batches will not only help to heat up your home if you leave your internal doors open, it will also help conserve other energy by reducing the amount of time that you use your oven or stoves. It’s a win-win situation.

Turn it down.

It’s becoming a well-known fact that by turning down your thermostat by as little as 1°C, you can save a whopping £80-£90 per year on your heating bills. This leads us to the question, “How much more money could I save if I turned it down further?” By combining a lower temperate with wearing a jumper or two, you’ll be able to see a considerable difference when you receive that heating bill at the end of the month.

Think about your radiators.

Your radiators can be a lifesaver when it’s freezing cold outside, but are you really using them to your advantage? Take note of whether there are any pieces of furniture around them that could be restricting the heat getting to different parts of the room. Make sure they have plenty of breathing space so that the warm air can circulate.

There are other helpful tricks to consider to make sure your rooms stay warm. Try hiding tin foil behind your radiators to reflect the heat into your room or add a radiator booster to propel that warm air around your chosen space. There’s so much you can do to help your radiators do their job as best they can.

Room temperatures.

There is no point in fully heating every room in your house all at once. If you’re spending the evening in one room of your house and know you won’t spend a lot of time in other rooms, lower the temperature in these other rooms! It’ll still give you a bit of warmth when it’s time for bed, but you’ll conserve a lot of heat energy, saving you money in the long run. Also, setting your heating to turn itself on or off at certain times of the day can help save heat, and ensure your house will be warm exactly when you need it to be.

Loft, wall and floor insulation.

Insulating your house well can make all the difference. It gives your home an extra layer; think about how you’d put on a jumper to keep yourself warm! Grabbing the right insulation can be a lot easier than you initially thought. Some energy suppliers offer a free or discounted insulation service, making it extremely good value.

Insulation works by collecting the heat from your home and keeping it there. It’s common knowledge that heat rises, so having a well-insulated loft at the very least can stop that heat from escaping and recycle it. This ensures there is a cycle of warm air circulating your home for as long as possible.

Change the way you heat.

Did you know that the way you heat your home plays a big part in the cost of your heating bills? Choosing the right heating option can dramatically decrease your payment each month. For example, the cost of heating oil has dropped recently, and possesses a whole host of benefits when compared to other options. It’s cheaper, more efficient and entirely safe for use in the home. Rethinking your heating source options should be high on your agenda.

So, there you have it. It’s worth taking into account some of these tips to not only save you a ton of money on your heating bills but to also make things a little more convenient for you in the long run. It’s worth revisiting and reviewing your heating options each time winter comes around to make sure you’re doing everything you can to reduce those costs!
