We all know socialization is essential to our happiness. But, you might not realize that it also impacts our health. In fact, lack of socialization is considered more harmful than diabetes and hypertension. Not making time for friends also increases your risk of inflammation as much as a lack of physical exercise. So, you could say your life depends upon seeing your friends often enough.
Yet, while more of us are turning to exercise, we’re going the opposite way with friendships. We’re busy creatures, and making time for the relationships in our lives isn’t easy.
What’s more, social media has made it possible to keep up without taking time out. But, while you do still get the mental benefits of connection here, removing the face-to-face nature of interactions leaves your health at risk.
The trouble is, of course, that going out is the last thing you want to do when you get home from work. Netflix and your sofa are forever calling your name. But, if you care about your health, it’s time to get on top. This doesn’t involve going for a run or unrolling your yoga mat.
All you need to do is follow these pointers to schedule time for fun
Join your calendars
Most of us now keep our calendars online or on our phones. And, when your schedule is on the interweb, you have the option of sharing it. This should be the first step for you and your friends. If you have trouble finding times when you’re all free, this would remove the issue, and ensure you can settle on dates without hassle. Of course, you might not want your friends knowing about everything on your calendar. If that’s the case, color code instead of writing everything. That way, you can show when you’re free without giving too much away.
Make solid plans
Too often, we fall into the trap of saying ‘we should do something,’ and never doing it. Is it any surprise with such vague planning? When you don’t have a solid plan, there’s no pressing reason to meet at all. Instead, make solid plans every time you see each other. What’s more, you want to make plans that you can’t get out of at the last minute. Be honest; we’ve all cried off because we couldn’t be bothered. But, to make sure you can’t do that anymore, book in at restaurants well in advance, or even sign up for a set event like an escape room which will be fun, and give you the motivation to get there. You could even buy theater or cinema tickets. Then, you can ensure you put your bum on that seat!
Set a monthly date
If time is tight, it also worth setting a monthly date. By agreeing to meet on the 1st of every month, you can ensure that you already have socialization booked. You won’t need to waste time finding dates or getting the motivation to call. The plan will be set in stone, and already firm on your calendar.
