Hair Porosity
Porosity refers to how well moisture penetrates the cuticle layer of the hair shaft. In low porosity hair, the cuticles are resistant and repel moisture. In normal hair, the cuticles lay flat allowing moisture to penetrate the hair. With high porosity hair, the cuticles are raised and moisture easily escapes the hair shaft.
Measurements of Hair Porosity Levels |
Low Porosity
Use a water-based liquid leave in moisturizer and a light natural oil such as jojoba to seal your hair. Heavy oils do not absorb well on low porosity.
Medium Porosity
Use moisture rich (not protein) silicone free conditioners and a light cream or liquid based
moisturizer. Seal ends with a natural oil.
High Porosity
Use the 3 step system such as a liquid leave-in, rich curl cream and heavy butter. ACV rinses are great for closing the cuticle and retaining moisture.
