Skin is the largest organ of our body and the first thing that the world sees about us. How you look has a great impact on your sense of confidence and self-worth. Spotless skin radiating with health not only makes a good impression but also indicates the robustness of your overall health. Having healthy skin is easy if you have a skincare routine.
Identifying your skin type
Regardless of the type of skin you have, your skincare routine consists of 5 key steps. The variation comes in the products you use in each of those steps. Wrong products do more harm than good to your skin. It is therefore important to know your skin type before you shop for the products.
Like in the skincare routine so with skin types, number 5 plays an important role. There are five main skin types: oily, dry, normal, combination, and sensitive. To identify your skin type, all you have to do is wash your face with a gentle cleanser and then wait for half an hour. If your skin feels and appears normal then you have normal skin. If it feels dry and a bit stretchy, you have dry skin. If your skin is shiny, it’s oily and if your T zone area appears oily and the rest normal, you have combination skin. Lastly, if your skin has been dry, itchy, and sensitive towards certain ingredients or products, you have sensitive skin.
1. Cleansing
It is highly recommended that you use a gentle cleanser twice a day to cleanse your skin off the pollutants and dust and keep it looking healthy and vibrant.
Your skin wages a war against external aggressors like UV rays, pollution, harsh weather, and other impurities the moment it steps out. You can help your skin in its fight by prepping it up every morning and night. This is where the cleansing comes in. Cleansers clean your skin off all impurities, debris, and dirt that get accumulated throughout the day. Refreshed after a good cleansing, your skin is like a blank canvas and allows other skincare products to give their best.
Apply a gentle cleanser suitable for all skin types twice a day to get rid of all pollutants from your skin. Finding an ideal cleanser is a struggle for many.
2. Toning
Toning is an oft-ignored but essential step in your daily skincare routine. It not only keeps your skin hydrated but also contains the acne outbreak and maintains the suppleness of your skin. Each skin type has a different pH balance that ultimately determines the health of your skin. What the toner does is restore the pH balance and close the pores.
3. Exfoliation
Your skin is teeming with cells, both alive and dead. When you are young, the skin repairs itself every 28 days by replacing the dead skin cells with fresher and newer cells. These repair session help maintain the health of your skin and makes it look fresh. As you advance in years, your body starts losing its ability to do these periodic repairs. This results in the outermost layer looking rough and lackluster due to dirt, debris, and other impurities clinging to it. When it comes to addressing this particular issue, there is no important skincare routine step other than exfoliation. Exfoliation gently sloughs away the impurities accumulated on your skin and unearths the younger and fresher-looking skin from underneath.
Oily, dry, or sensitive, exfoliation is important for all skin types. Anything over twice-weekly exfoliation would result in stripping your skin of its natural oils. This is especially problematic for people with dry skin who naturally have an under active sebaceous glands. A gentle exfoliator that is free of harmful chemicals and artificial fragrances would be an ideal companion for all skin types.
4. Moisturizing
If there is universal agreement on one product that is important for all skin types, it’s a humble tube of moisturizer. The soft and supple-looking skin that is your pride and joy is all thanks to the natural oils that your body secrets. When the skin is robbed of its optimum moisture content, it starts to feel dry and becomes home for premature aging. Regular use of a moisturizer hydrates your skin and renews the natural moisture of your body. It creates a film on your skin preventing the already existing moisture from escaping thus retaining the luminosity of your skin.
Remember the two min rule of applying moisturizer. Apply your moisturizer two minutes after your shower to get maximum benefits out of it.
