Improving the health of your hair is something that you can do in order to make it last longer and hopefully retain its youthful appearance as you age. Be gentle with your hair

In general, a good tip for looking after the health of your hair is to be gentle with it. You don’t want to be dragging your hair through a brush too vigorously or using the wrong type of hair brush for your hair’s texture, for example.

Being gentle with your hair is something that is going to help avoid breakage. Washing your hair is another time when you’re likely to be a bit rougher with your hair. Whether that’s rubbing your hair dry with a towel or being a bit too vigorous with the shampooing and conditioning of your hair.

Start being a little more gentle with your hair so that you can minimize the damage to your hair’s health.

Care for your scalp with oils

When it comes to improving the health of your hair, a good way to do it is by caring for your scalp. Using oils to coat your hair is a great way to rehydrate and add shine to your hair. This is best to do on a day where you’re planning to washing your hair anyway.

Apply a hair oil to your scalp and to the rest of your head of hair. Be sure to fully coat it and be generous with your application. You can then plait or tie your hair up into a bun so that it’s out of the way for the remainder of the day.

For the rest of the day, you can then relax or get on with what you’re doing that day before washing it off in the shower and doing your usual haircare routine from there. Caring for your scalp with oils is a great way to break down any dead follicles, while also nourishing the foundations of your hair to ensure more growth happens.

Drink plenty of water

A great way to help ensure your hair feels and looks healthy is by drinking plenty of water. This makes a big difference to hair’s health because your body is always in need of water. The more water you’re drinking, the better.

Ideally, you’ll need around a liter to a liter and a half of water a day. While that might seem like a lot of water to some, it is an ideal amount for staying hydrated. On days when you might be working out, you should look to drink more water where you can.

You might be heading to the toilets more often than not but if you’re drinking water regularly, then you’ll certainly notice somewhat of a difference to your hair. It’s something that can not only benefit for your hair in the long run but your health in general. When it comes to drinking water, you want to always prioritize getting several pints in per day where possible.

Reduce the use of heat tools

When it comes to the health of your hair, the more heat you put on it and expose it to, the more you’re going to damage it. With that being said, try to reduce the use of heat tools where possible. There’s nothing more damaging to your hair than heat, especially if you’re not using a heat protectant spray.

Look at how often you use heat tools on a weekly basis and try to find heatless alternatives where possible. For example, if you love curling your hair, then there are heatless rollers and curlers that you can sleep in and that are comfortable for the most part. The result, along with the right products to combat nighttime frizz, is effortless, blowout curls.

Consider hair supplements for an extra health boost

Hair supplements are something that you should certainly consider when it comes to your hair’s health. As you get older, you lose a lot of the natural nutrients and vitamins that your body produces. Collagen is a big player in hair elasticity and the health of the hair in general.

You might want to consider what hair supplements are out there and what options might be best for your hair type. Hair gummies are the typical go-to for many but there are also collagen liquids you can take now in order to get that all-important goodness to your roots.

With hair supplements, it’s good to take a look at what the benefits are so that you know what to look for when it comes to ingredients. While there will be some sought-after hair supplements that are considered the ‘it’ product, they might not be the best for your hair and what’s available on the market.

Wash your hair less frequently

If you’re looking to revitalize your hair, then how often you wash your hair, could be having an impact on it. Washing your hair every day might have become the norm and for many, is the case. However, when you’re washing your hair so frequently, you risk stripping all of the natural oils within your hair out.

That results in dry, lifeless hair and if you’re someone that washes their hair more than three or four times a week, then you could be sabotaging your hair’s health in the long run.

Damaged hair isn’t just down to one contributor. Washing your hair too much doesn’t damage the hair alone but it’s influenced by many factors. The more positive things you can do for your hair, the better.

So with that in mind, when it comes to washing your hair, try to only wash your hair once or twice a week at the most. Your hair will thank you for it, even if it feels a little greasy to begin with.

At the same time, you should play around with different shampoo and conditioner products as your hair will get used to the same products over time with regular use. Consider switching it up in order to keep it fresh and to give your hair an opportunity to try something new that might be better for your hair than what you currently use.

Seek medical guidance

If you’re looking to take a more medical approach to your hair’s health, then it might worth be considering medical guidance. It’s not often the route that many will go down, as most will opt for the hair salon. However, there are professionals out there who will be able to help by offering a hair restoration treatment

This might not be suitable for everyone but it’s certainly worth exploring to see if it’s something that would benefit you and your hair needs.

Consume more protein in your diet

The type of diet you have, certainly has an impact on your hair’s health, albeit your health in general. Protein is a much-needed part of your diet and can be great for the hair’s health, particularly when it comes to the strength of the hair.

Breakages can be a problem for many and can cause a lot of damage to the hair whereby those with breakage, struggle to grow their hair to a longer length. If you’re looking to improve your hair’s health, then it might be worthwhile to consume more protein in your diet. Look at what foods contain high levels of protein and incorporate this into your diet where possible.

Here are a few foods that contain protein and are worth adding to your diet:

  • Milk
  • Yogurt
  • Chickpeas
  • Seeds – sunflower, pumpkin, sesame
  • Cheese
  • Nuts

This list isn’t exhaustive and there are plenty of other foods containing protein that are worth taking advantage of if you’re a little more particular about what you eat and don’t eat.

Don’t forget to visit the hair salon every so often

Finally, when you need to stay on top of your hair’s health, make sure you’re visiting the hair salon every so often. Not everyone has the money to afford a trip to the hair salon every six to eight weeks as recommended by the hair stylists themselves. However, if you can go more frequently than you may currently go, then this is a great way to help with your hair’s growth.

It will also drastically improve the appearance of your hair as split ends can really show up on your hair, especially where it’s darker.

These tips should hopefully give you the best start in taking charge of your hair’s health this year and making it magazine-worthy for those who would like it to look so.
